Quick answer
Cancel your membership in your account settings. Netflix keeps canceled accounts for about 10 months in case you come back. To have your personal information deleted, email privacy@netflix.com from the address on your account.
Step 1: Cancel your membership
- Sign in at netflix.com in a web browser.
- Select your profile icon, then Account.
- Choose Cancel membership, then Finish cancellation.
You can keep watching until the end of your current billing period. If you pay for Netflix through another company, such as your phone, cable, or internet provider, cancel through that company instead. Netflix also doesn't let you cancel from most smart TV apps.
Step 2: Download your data (optional)
If you want a record of your viewing history or account details, request a copy first at netflix.com/account/getmyinfo. Netflix says it can take up to 30 days to prepare.
Step 3: Ask Netflix to delete your personal information
Canceling isn't the same as deleting. Netflix keeps your profiles, viewing history, and account details for about 10 months after you cancel so it can restore them if you rejoin. To ask for your personal information to be deleted, contact Netflix's privacy office:
Netflix may ask you to verify your identity, and it notes that it keeps some information where the law requires it, for example for billing records.
Netflix is probably not the only one
Most people have dozens of companies holding their information, from old shopping accounts to apps they've forgotten. DataTrail scans your inbox (read-only) to find them all, flags the ones with data breaches, and writes the deletion requests for you.
